Hello. Go to the Latitude 3540 html support page and download and reinstall one of the Realtek audio drivers. Only get one for your operating system: WT = Win10, and WB = Win8.1 (look in the "supported OS" column).
Install the driver then test by playing some audio from your hard drive. Listen to the speakers and then listen through headphones.
If you need more help, tell us which operating system it has, also did the audio ever work? Did you just purchase it -- it is an older model so if you got a used one the audio might have already been an issue.
