It's possible that the ebay vendor retained the software and licenses or that they belong to his Company.  The HDD was therefor formatted blank.  You can always buy new OS and apps s/w at the store.  Do you have another computer with software on it? Did the 3500 come cheap?  Did the selling points state no software included?

You need an OS (operating system) installed in order for any programs to run.   Think of the OS as a fundamental language for the notebook to be told what to do and how to do it.

Next you will need applications like MS Word/Excel/Outlook.  These progams allow you to type letters, make spreadsheets and do email.  There are many different types of applications but they all need the OS in order to run.

It looks like you may have to spend several hundred dollars to buy these.  I would ask a friend who knows about computers to help you out a bit.

Good luck

OS and apps s/w? Does that mean Windows? I have another computer... a sony vaio... but it doesn't accept the software. I paid $300. He didn't even mention software... he just mentioned no operating system. I am completely stupid when it comes to computers... so any help is very appreciated.

It says no operating system because it doesn't have one. As you said that was specified in the auction. You need to go BUY one at a computer store (probably Windows XP) and install it.

You may not want to try XP on a system with a 400 MHz or lower CPU and only 256 MBytes of RAM - you might be better off looking for a copy of Windows 98 on EBay to go with the system.
