Notebook Replacement Keyboard: installation difficulty

I'm trying to install a new keyboard into a Inspiron 9400/E1705 and unable to get it to work. Even the damaged keyboard doesn't work now. Anyone installed a replacement keyboard before? I'm not sure if I'm getting the KB cable in the KB connector, in fact I imagine I'm not. Unfortunately the instructions are lacking a detailed description of how to this, but I know I'm close. Help.

The connector only fits one way - if two keyboards don't work, it's likely the system board is faulty, not the keyboard.

I doubt it's the system board because the old KB worked fine. The only reason I'm replacing it is due to a few keys that popped off. All was well till I detached it. I honestly think I'm not getting the KB cable in correctly, but there's no descripition of what that is, so I'm unsure I'm doing this correctly.
