On screen volume control
All of a sudde, my laptop has decided not to show the transparent blue box on screen with the volume control/levels on it. Likewise, with the Caps lock sign. This is very inconvinient for me then I do not know when they are on/off. This is a problem, especially when using passwords. Caps and volume/mute do work, but when I just the Fn buttons from 1 - 12, no on screen display is visible anymore. How do I solve this?

Often no on screen volume is a Quick Set issue. Look on the taskbar and see if you have the Dell Quickset icon there. It's in the shape of a blue Q with a yellow tail sticking out of it. Click the icon (on some versions you must right click it) and uncheck 'disable onscreen volume meter.'
If the icon is missing look under Start/All Programs and see if you have the Dell Quickset program. Follow the arrow to the word 'Quickset' and click on it and the 'Q' icon should appear on the taskbar.
If you don't have the Quickset program you can download it from your downloads page under 'Applications'.
Quickset's main function is to start the power management wizard; however, clicking the icon lets you enable or disable the Fn keys for volume and screen brightness, and it is necessary for Media Direct to function.
Sometimes the issue is not Quickset. This was posted by forum member brooklyn27 and confirmed by others:
"I found a solution. I noticed that after I logged on and the battery message came up, my volume meter displayed. After the message disappeared, the volume meter no longer displayed. So, I double clicked on the battery and went to the "battery health" tab where it gives the "your battery is at the last of its life" message and checked "Please don't tell me this again." I restarted the laptop and the volume meter is back! Hurrah!"

Try pressing Fn + Brightness. On my laptop the brightness keys are the same as the up & down arrow keys. It might be different on your computer. Actually, Quickset is different depending on model. Maybe your Quickset does not support brightness. Here is a link to what Dell has to say about Quickset:
