Hi

You can buy Vista 64 bit at www.newegg.com look in the software section for the

Retail version or the OEM version for a cheaper price !

No with a Dell OEM Vista you are not able to get the 64 bit DVD from Microsoft you have to have the Retail version to get DVD from there !

Good Luck.

Hi

Your CPU is 64 bit .

I have no problems with 64 bit drivers at all or any XP software i use for it .

And i have used Vista 64 bit on all 8 of my computers and the D 8400 i have used it for

over a year now and have not had any BSOD !

It runs just as fast as XP 32 or XP Pro 64 bit

No Dell will not supply you with a 64 bit Vista you have to buy it and Dell will not give you software support

if you change to any other OS !

Yes your computer can run Vista 64 bit ! And most XP software works just fine

but if it has to install a 32 bit driver it will not work .

And no i have not heard any thing about Vista 64 bit have any kind of problems here on the Dell forums .

If you are happy with your computer the way it is stick with it !

Your Vista 64 bit drivers here.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WV64&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=XPS_M1710&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

And i have used a lot of the same 64 bit driver you will use if you go to Vista 64 bit on my

Inspiron 1501 when i needed a 64 bit drivers i go to your computer download page and use them for Vista 64 bit that is on my 1501 !

And i installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on it the same day i got it from Dell and is about 6 or 7 months now

and it does not give me any problems ether !

Same story for my E 521 it runs Vista Business 64 bit and the 64 bit driver there for it now that Dell gave them back !!

But it did give me a BSOD one time but guess it was the Vista 32 bit that did it !!

Well enough from my point of view on Vista 32 bit versus Vista 64 bit !

Good Luck

There is much more to know to this topic than would ever fit into this posting. I'll try to keep it as simple as possible.

Stick to 3,25GB of memory! That is already more than sufficient for your applications.

If you can't sleep well with this, then try this:

open the command promt with admistrator permissions and type
BCDedit /set PAE forceenable

Reboot PC and verify that you have 4GB (yes I am talking about 32Bit Vista!). If you do not, then one of multiple possible reasons has hit you:
a) either the 36bit address lines of the processor have not been connected to the mainboard. Quite common for laptops
b) the BIOS memory remapping is implemented not at all or faulty

In this case or if you encounter more BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) than before switch back to old 3,25GB of Memory:
BCDedit /set PAE default

There are quite a lot of driver issues that may hit you when trying to work with full 4GB memory support. Those are mentioned here
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B929605&x=15&y=12#
under " PAE-mode-induced driver compatibility issues"
