Have you tried
Mozilla or
Firefox. I only use ie for WindowsUpdate and the odd page that is written exclusively for ie(silly web developers the web is for everybody).
5-14-04--I am able to connect to internet but commonly get "this page cannot be displayed"--this happens with all of my favorite sites also. Have done everthing that the previous writer did in the letter dated 5/5/04. When I reboot my computer (microsoft Window XP) I am able to connect and have all pages displayed, if I close my connection and come back at a later time the problem reoccurs. Help?? Did the person who wrote on 5/5 resolve their problem and if so , how?
One thing to try is this, when you experience the IE Page Not Displayed Error open the command line. At the prompt type "ping google.com" and see if your internet connection is still working. That way you can isolate the problem to IE.
No one has said if they took my original suggestion to try another internet browser like
Mozilla, or Mozilla-Firefox, or even try another browser like
Opera. Please try this before responding again.
I still have not been able to fix this problem. In talking to a Dell tech, they got my computer so messed up that it went into a loop rebooting it self. There was no way to get this to stop happening. I finally reformatted my machine. Loaded all my software again. Got connected to the internet, was able to get my email downloaded to Outlook and surf the web for about 10 minutes, and the same problem popped up again. I am unable to get any more email on Outlook and an unable to send email also. I have McAfee virus scan and fire wall, along with some Anti-Spyware software. I am about out of options.
If you did a clean install of Windows and the problem was apparent on your first boot I have no idea what the problem is. Maybe its hardware? Are you connecting via a dial-up modem or via a DSL/Cable?
thanks for suggestion, Mozilla as a different browser has worked well. Although after talking to tech at ATT I did the following: Start then run and typed in Sf_/scan now and a windows file protections screen appeared and ran for about 15 minutes, problem with "page cannot be displayed" has gone even with IE. Also , in the midst of all of this,my computer died and had to have a new motherboard and memory units installed. Were these computer problems all related?
No software will almost never cause a hardware part to fail. Another thing that might have fixed the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error, it might be that your Windows Registery Winsock files were corrupted.
For help resetting the Winsock files and the TCP/IP stack you can go to ....

That is a step by step walkthrough for fixing that issue.
Just so you know, :)
