The battery is about 2 years old. I actually bought a new battery from dell last month. Unfortunately, replacing the old battery with the new only revealed that the battery is not the problem.
First thing to check is that the BIOS (F2 at powerup) senses the AC adapter correctly. If the adapter is listed as "unknown", try a new Dell adapter - and if that doesn't solve the problem, the system needs an internal repair (to the power jack) or a replacement system board.

How old is the battery? They do go bad after a while.
I've seen them go in less than one year.
