Port Replicator Problems

After reading all the messages about the APR/8500 problems , which I am having also, and have gone through all the same trial and errors suggested by techs and what not, the only fix I have seen is a new motherboard. This 8500 was shipped July 8, 2003, same time as a lot of the problem 8500's seem to come from. Now, how do I get a new motherboard.

Thanks for letting us know.  I spent an hour on the phone to Dell last week, got no where, and am reluctant to call them again.

Hopefully I won't have to now.

If anyone has any news on a patch becoming available, please let us know.

Thanks

Just incase people are still having problems..... I ended up doing a whole load of troubleshooting with tech support.  When nothing worked, they finally agreed to collect the laptop.   They returned the laptop to me in 4 working days.  They replaced the motherboard and I am no longer have problems.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that one.  I refused to phone tech support (find it very frustrating to be hanging on the phone for hours) and so corresponded by emails.  They would write to me pretty much every day with things to try and every day I would respond with 'that did not work, please send an engineer'. The whole process took about 6 weeks.  I'm not sure they'll agree to replacing the motherboard without going through the motions.  Good luck with it anyway!

This makes me revert to my original question, how do I get a new motherboard without all the grief Dell will put me through to come to the conclusion that the motherboard has a defect. I have only heard of two people getting a complete resolution and both incorporated motherboard replacement. I have already purchased a new home computer and it wasn't a Dell because of the lousy service from Dell.

I too am having APR problems (for some time) ...as follows:

1: sleep option just crashes XP - 2: Docking / undocking changes screen-res to highest setting - 3: USB ports very flaky - 4: Microsoft USB Optical Mouse refuses to work (on APR or laptop ports) - 5: No sound from APR headphone socket...my set-up would not be a good advert for Dell....

I have an Inspiron 8200 and this problem (which seems to run across all models) has really changed the way I perceive DELL and its Technical Support team....why do WE have to chase the problem so much wheh it should be down to Dell to knuckle down and nail the problem once and for all....

The solution for the 8500 is called R77764.EXE search it at your nearest dell website

Thanks for that but I don't think this is for Inspiron 8200.....also I have got used to the limitations and work around them - ie I can live with sporadic screen res changes now and again when docking / undocking - no mic through port rep and sleep crashing (don't use sleep anymore when using APR) and I ditched the Microsoft Optical Mouse that wouldn't play ball with Dell's USB ports.....(solved) - thanks Dell....

APPRECIATED!

Thanks for the info anf I downloaded the file and ran the install. It dod not fix the problem which further makes me believe there is an inherent problem on this motherboard. I think I will do what poor little guy did and keep hounding Dell by email. If I had started 6 weeks ago it might be resolverd by now.

Another solution possible should be to deactivate the USB 2.0 roothub (i belive it's called - sorry danish version of XP makes it impossible to understand what anything means).

I'm not sure it works but at least it a fairly simple thing to try out.

Don't remove it, just deactivate it.

Tor,
I checked the USB 2.0 and it is already been disabled. Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen this posted by one of the Forum Moderators at the top of the thread. Maybe I'll go backwards and enable it. Logic says it should not work but nothing on this is logical otherwise why would it have worked for six months and then just given up. Unless again, something on the motherboard fried.

Thanks Tor - no that's one of the things I tried early on - didn't make any difference.....as I said it's easier to use as is than all the exhaustive non-working fixes I tried - don't know what I'll tell the buyer though when I come to sell it.....Maybe Dell will have answers by then - wow, a large pink animal just flew past my window.....
