power adapter

i have an inspiron 8600 and all of the sudden out of no where i get a message that the adapter cannot be identified and the battery wont charge because of it. i have not done anything to the adapter or the battery it just happened one day. i have only had the computer for about 4 months. is there something that could be causing this?
