Power cord issues
OK,..if the battery plays up,.as it did,..then i rely heavily on the power cord...I leave it plugged in permanently,..but from putting the laptop back into its bag and out again,..the cord eventually broke (after 11 months) The ethernet cable busted at about the same time,..but was easily replaced for $10...Not wanting to go thru the rigmarole of warranty claim or correspondence of any kind,..i simply soldered the broken laptop cable,...and thought it was all fixed... Next problem was,. that the plug-in at the laptop end kept falling out,.. Now due to the battery not working,..this meant that all work was immediately lost and a complete re-start had to be performed...Useless time-wasting Vista did not help in this regard... Now,.tonight,.i hurriedly type,.as i was lucky enough to get the battery working (whack!!).... Thing is,..the power cord will not work AT ALL,..because the middle bit seems to have snapped off entirely..... My humble suggestion is this....Can DELL please bring out a laptop which.... 1.has the power cord plugging in on the side,.rather than the rear...and...2.More importantly,.can they please make the plug-in,..one of those screw in connections,.like the ones for printers etc...which have the 2 long bolts either side of the connector...This would solve the problem of suddenly losing power... I do think that this issue is seemingly minor,..yet crucial...since without power,..the battery cannot charge,..and however good the laptop is,it is rendered useless once the cord fails.. If i could weld the cord on,i would!! .Now tomorrow i will call DELL and see how much it is for a new cord...Otherwise i am happy with the vostro 1500,..and have recommended DELL to anyone that will listen....Sorry if this was too long or boring,....but its my last typing for a while,..so there you go:)

The biggest problem is that the power supply has a replacable cord going into the wall, but NOT where it goes into the computer. This design is old, annoying and should be improved. I have NEVER had a cord break between the power supply and the wall, but my kid's laptops need new power supplies on a regular basis. This is because the adapter that plugs into the computer invariably wears-out and breaks due to using it as...a LAPTOP. Not a desktop...Apple has a good design this way with the magnetic connector that can never be stressed as it just pops-off under any stress. Dell should either implement a magnetic design like Apple (well, probably a few patents in the way there!) or at LEAST make the cord from the power supply to the computer REPLACEABLE instead of having to replace the whole thing...I'm surprised no company has improved on this...
