Power problem with 8100

I'm kinda new to this forum.. so be patient with me.
 
Today, my 8100 system just won't power on.
I've removed the battery and then re plug it in and use ac to power it on but it wouldn't.
My question is, how long does this battery suppose to last? and doesn't this system suppose to power on even without the battery? Is the problem that the battery won't recharge again?
If I get replacement battery then will the system power on? and if I need to place the battery
then where do I get them? From Dell only?

I have the same problem on my 8200 I think so if you get a resolution please post.

For known reason, my computer is okay now.
 
But Tech Support from Dell told me try this next time something like this would happen.
 
1. Unplug the AC from the computer (done that)
2. Unplug the battery from the system (done that too)
* step 1 and step 2 can be changed I think..
 
3. Press and hold the power button for more than 30 seconds.  (I only did for 15 seconds or so)
4. Plug the AC and start the computer (done this too but didn't work for 2 days)
5. Plug the battery back and to see if the battery is being charged.  (I couldn't check 'cause no power up to this point).
 
This was the explanation for my possible problem represented by kind tech rep....
Sometimes... the when battery dies (not charged) then it prevents from being power up from AC.
So above procedure would reset it.
 
Honestly, I'm not convinced.  I did everything before except not for 30 seconds and the power went out all of sudden.  For 2 days when I tried to power on with AC only (with battery pulled out), it didn't work and plus I always had battery in and used AC all the time.  Why all of sudden?  Anyway..
I'm happy to see my computer on.  I think I should get a cheap desktop just in case.

Today.. February 1, 2005... my 8100 died on me again... I'm getting mad now.

I did exactly what the tech support told me to do.. but it didn't work.

I just don't know what to do... I should've saved all my work on CD while I had a chance.

Why are there so many power problems with dell notebooks??

I tried your fix, it worked for me for 1 night. I have an 8100 as well but I can run mine from AC or the battery but I cannot have the battery in while its on AC. So the battery won't charge it's long past being a pain. My Dell laptop is now a desktop at best and I am in the field service industry, it makes it hard to service customer machines when mine own laptop is junk. It maybe time to look to someplace other then Dell for a new laptop.
