Problem with Integrated High Definition Audio

Hello friends:

I bought an Inspiron E1705 one year ago. For business reasons I had to change the XP Home edition to the Professional system version, but now the system does not recognize the audio hardware. I think this could be a driver problem. Could somebody tell me how I can find the driver for the Inspiron Integrated High Definition Audio (Part Number 313-4217)? Or tell me how can I fix this problem? I can't here the audio from DVDs or other audio files.

Thanks a lot

Antonio.-

It's pretty simple.  Log in to your DELL account.  There should be a spot under your listed computer for "Drivers and Downloads" or something like that.  Click on it.  There should be a list of drivers for you there.  If your computer shipped with XP HOME then the OS will need to be changed to XP Pro...though to be honest I think it will be the same driver either way.  Pro just adds functionality, it's not a different operating system.

Regardless, find the driver for your audio component, downlaod it and double click it.  The executable should do the rest.

Hope this helps.

If you bought the computer from somewhere other than DELL you can find DELL's driver page through the "Support" and then "Drivers" somehow.  I forget the literal flowchart on how to get there, but a little poking around should bring it up pretty quick.  Search for the driver from there.

It's odd that XP doesn't have a generic driver for that card though.

Is it still under warranty?

XP should have installed at least a basic generic audio driver that should have provided you with sound.

Did you clean-install XP Pro or did you just upgrade over your XP Home?

If it's still under warranty just call DELL and have them take care of it.  You paid for it.

Does the device driver see the audio device?  if so, does it say it's working properly?

Hello SoulWeb and thanks for your assistance.

I've tried looking for the driver through the Dell Driver's page, but there are only 3 drivers available  and non of them is for the Inspiron HD Audio.

I found a possible solution related in the Audio FAQ which indicates to download the System Utilities and the Chipset Drivers first. After the instalation of these, the problem persists still.

I hope to find here other tips ...

Thanks.

Also, although it's called, "Inspiron HD Audio" the driver may not be called that.  In the device manager under properties it should tell you exactly what it is.  I don't have that model computer so I'm just throwing guesses out there until someone more knowledgeable comes along.

I have had audio problems in the past.  And though they don't really affect performance at all, it is incredibly annoying.  Especially because i leave my laptop on during the day and only come to it when I hear there's an email.  ...Like Pavlov's dog.

The specific driver is the Sigmatel STAC 92xx HD. As mentioned, after an operating system re-installation, install Dell Notebook System Software, then the Intel Mobile Chipset driver prior to the Sigmatel. Any pre-existing Sigmatel drivers can be removed in the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, but usually this is not necessary.

The way I find drivers is to use the link on the lower left. In the Dell Support Tools box is the Driver & Downloads link. You can use your Service Tag number or just follow the links.

Hi friends:

I got the solution for this problem and I want to share it ...

As jimco said, the specific driver is the Sigmatel STAC 92XX HD, but when I tried to install it, appeared the message "This system does not support the driver you are attempting to install" ... It was so disappointing !!!

Looking for another solution I found some similar problems related in this forum.

It was neccesary to download the hotfix 927891 windows update; after installing it, I could find and install the previous version of the Sigmatel STAC 92XX HD (You can find it looking in the Dell drivers page under R114282.EXE) and finally install the latest version of it (the R122161.EXE).

I hope this post could help other customers with similar problems.

Thanks.
