Problems with AC Adapters

Question

I am now on my 4th AC adapter. For some reason, they just stop charging the laptop, and the adapter light is out. This has happened in various situations, outlets, PC off/PC on, etc. Number 3 lasted one week. What's up? It's costing me a small fortune!

You're replacing the wrong part. The system board is faulty.

Great. So, this is a big leap of faith - is dell going to replace the $210 I've spent on adapters, (assuming I'll take the hit of down time for my business), and replace the system board? How do I get this fixed?

Probably not, if the system is out of warranty. If it's more than a couple of years old, or a low-end (1000/11xx/1200/2200/etc) system it may not be worth replacing the system board - the replacement cost will run $400-500.

maybe I already posted this - but I got this in Aug 2004. So with the money I spent on this + $200 on adapters, I am just out of luck? I cannot believe that with something faulty with the system I have to buy another in that short time. Will my hard drive be ok? Is the problem just going to get progressively worse?

Could this problem have something to do with my screen flickering -- its done this a handful of times. And the system locks up pretty often.

had the same problem with ins 5100 and was told motherboard issue and took it to a repair shop outside dell and it cost $48 for a new power block. not a motherboard. it was fine

So I'm being told that I either have to fork over $159 and wait 15 days (hello..??!) to get my laptop checked, or pay for a out-of-warranty service call. Anyone know how much that will cost me? I am seriously thinking of just taking it somewhere local. It won't fry my hard drive will it?
