Problems with Mouse buttons

August 15th the buttons on my Dell laptop mouse became irratic in response to commands, it has worsened since then making anything I try to do, a long difficult job - and sometimes impossible.  When I press the left mouse button the scroll icon appears, I have to keep pressing - often in vain - to get the cursor to appear and try to get it to respond.  I'm able to perform certain functions by using the up & down keys and the return key.  But the situation makes using the computer a long & tedious experience.  I may be clutching at straws, but the problems seemed to coincide with my first attempt at printing from the laptop.  I had installed the printers driver, but had always used my desktop for printing, until this one occasion when I decided to give it a go.  The printer sounded like it was going through the motions, and the paper came out, but with nothing printed on it.  I tried 3 times before giving up and went onto the desktop to print the same document, at the same time, so I thought, clearing the 3 previous attempts.  The next time I went on the laptop, the problems with the mouse buttons began.  Does anyone have any solutions?

Hi Freddles,

The erratic touchpad issue occurs generally because the touchpad drivers are not installed properly or if the touchpad settings are hampered. It may be possible that when you were installing the printer driver, it may have corrupted the touchpad drivers.

Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue

Step1: Update the touchpad driver and the system BIOS from the below mentioned link.

Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:

  • Battery should have 10% charge
  • Adapter should be connected
  • No external devices should be connected.
  • All other programs should be closed and documents saved

Kindly enter the Service Tag; choose the system model and Operating System and download the latest Touchpad driver and BIOS on your system. You will find the touchpad driver listed under ‘Input drivers’

Kindly reboot the system after updating the above drivers and check for the normal system functionality.

Step 2: Kindly change the touchpad sensitivity according to your requirement. The steps are:

Kindly change the touchpad sensitivity according to your requirement. The steps are:

1.      Turn on the computer and log into Windows as normal. Open the "Start" menu and click on the option labeled "Control Panel."

2.      Double-click on the icon labeled "Mouse.". The "Mouse Properties" window will open and it will have a touchpad option. Open the touchpad option and navigate to the tab labeled "Device Settings." Click on the button labeled “Settings." A window labeled "Properties" will appear.

3.      Examine the left panel of the "Properties" window and expand the option labeled "Sensitivity." Click on the option labeled "Touch Sensitivity."

4.      Reduce the touch sensitivity setting by moving the slider to the right, towards the "Heavy Touch" label. Experiment with different levels of sensitivity until you find one suited to your needs.

5.      Click on the button labeled "OK" to close the "Properties" window; repeat with the "Mouse" control panel. Your new touchpad sensitivity settings are now saved.

6.     Kindly reboot the system and check if the mouse works fine.

Once the mouse is working, check the printer drivers in the device manager. Click on Start> type Device Manager in the search box> check under imaging devices if the printer driver is installed. If not please reinstall the driver and setup the printer once again.

Glad to help. Please reply for further help.
