PSA Pre-Boot system error code

Question

When running tests again on my xps M1710 I got a pop up window with several beeps when it came to my cd-rom part...

error code 0148 Msg error code 2000-0148 MSG unit 2 IDE Error: Status IA Error Register 0024h and a whole bunch of other letters and numbers..

I tried to look it up but it wasn't even listed as that.. I found a 0147..

I think that my rom drive is shot.. I am not waiting several hours to get at the service tag tests . Anyone got any comments or ideas?

Hi Phil,

Error code 0148 indicates it is hard drive failure. Let me know if you are able to boot the system to the desktop. Also check if the CD/DVD drive is detected in the BIOS and windows. To go to BIOS tap F2 key every two seconds at start up.

Let me know the reason you were trying to run diagnostics.

I was able to detect my DVD drive in bios.. I used f 12 to get to it because F2 got me to advanced start up options.

I was running tests because of a blue screen of death kept showing up at start up. My reasons for running tests were explained in some of my earlier posts. My advanced tests showed that my hard drive passed all the tests but is positively giving me problems. I am hoping that I can still use it after a format. I would not enjoy a purchase of a new one at 50 to 100 $ but that might be the only way to overcome my problem.

I am looking at some usb adapters on ebay similar to the Vantec kit...... I am still thinking about rolling the dice..
