Hi Gabriel,

Please click on the link below for steps to clean the vents on your Dell Computer.

http://dell.to/16waXyn

When using a can of compressed air, use the can according to the directions on the side of the can as you can cause damage to the computer, if used incorrectly.

For your query related to replacing thermal grease, we recommend you do not disassemble the system yourself as thermal grease is part of a Field Replaceable Unit and only a Dell Certified Technician should work on it.  Some thermal greases can lasts for several years without requiring replacement.  Excess grease separating the metal surfaces more than the minimum necessary to exclude air gaps will only degrade conductivity, increasing the risk of overheating. Also, if too much force is applied, the processor may be damaged.

Keeping all the points mentioned above in mind, we recommend you do not attempt to replace any hardware components by yourself unless you wish to upgrade a particular component  (say, a hard drive or memory) or if it is absolutely necessary and you are comfortable doing so.

Please reply if you have any further queries.

Thanks and regards,
Babita S

Hi Gabriel,

Thank you for your reply.

How often to clean your computer depends on the environment the computer operates in. Before you begin cleaning the computer, please ensure that it is turned off and unplugged. Remove the laptop battery.

Sometimes, dust, dirt, hair or other substances may get into the case openings and can prevent air from flowing in or out. This can cause heating problems and in some cases, may also cause issues like random reboots. You can use a cotton swab or compressed air to remove dust, dirt, hair, etc. as and when you feel it is necessary.

Please feel free to contact us in case of any further queries.

Thanks and regards,
Babita S

I understand. So I'll try to get a hold of one of those cans and leave the thermal grease alone for now. Thank you = )

The only thing I forgot to ask is, how often should this be done in average?
