Question on using the recovery software

My 3800  has got to the point when I can only start it in safe mode.  I now have to use the recovery disk that came with the computer to fix it.

I have alot of files that I do not want to loose on this computer.  If I make a new hard drive partition (I only have a C: hard drive drive currently), can I copy all my files to the new partition so they will be safe?  Or does the recovery software format the entire hard drive?

I've never had to use the recovery software before.

Thank You.

You can only create another parititon without losing data if you do so using a utility such as Partition Magic. At that, you should back up first.

The cheapest option would be to purchase an external drive case or adapter cable and mount the drive in another system, and copy what you need. Then return the drive to the notebook, format and reinstall.

You will have to do so manually - there is no recovery option for older systems like the Inspiron 3800.

Backups are always a good idea. If you have a CD/DVD burner or a second hard drive or a network storage option, you can remove some of the vulnerability of keeping everything on a single drive. Separate partitions are also a good idea.

P.S. - Note that (unless you are using some other recovery tool) the recovery software originally provided with your system is a CD to reinstall the OS. It may allow the option of repairing the operating system installation, if your OS is XP. You need additional CDs (some of which were originally provided with your system) or downloads (preferably burned to CD in advance) to reinstall additional drivers, utilities, and applications.
