Random 8600 keyboard issue

Hi everyone,

I'm having a somewhat random keyboard problem that I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has had any similar issues with.

It started out in this emulator program that I use.  Keyboard input would go flaky after about 30 seconds (keystrokes would be delayed in responding before that) then all of a sudden it was like the keyboard had a backlog of input data because the character on screen would start moving about and doing things without me doing anything (I think they were all keypresses from earlier when things had been sluggish).  After a few seconds it would stop, but key responce would still be sluggish and then it would start again.

A similar thing is now happening in the new Unreal Tournament 2004 demo that was just released.  Any thoughts on this?  I've turned off the sticky keys and other such functions in Windows to no avail.  In the above instance with the emulator, joystick support works great and the same program works fine on my desktop (home built).

well, daroga, it seems that we meet again... i just responded to your message on the UT2004 forum, and came over here to see if there were any other reports.  my 8600 is having the exact same problem in the UT2004 demo.  it's odd... other graphics intensive programs (mainly computational chemistry stuff) have no problem.  Call of Duty runs fine, KOTOR runs fine.  I'm beggining to wonder if UT2004 isn't playing nice with the ATI 9600, and that the keybuffer somehow is being corrupted.

I've got a temporary workaround working now...  I've docked the 8600 and plugged an old keyboard into the docking station, and the problem seems to be resolved,  But it still's no good,  to have to dock and plug in an ancient keyboard.

That's great and all except we bought laptops to be mobile

Anyway, anyone else have this problem?  Anyone else have a suggested solution?

Yeah.......I'm having the EXACT same issue in UT2004.  When playing, sometimes......just right outta the blue.....all of a sudden my keyboard input get laggy.  If I sit back for a few seconds to let things "empty" everything returns to normal....for the most part.  Sometimes I have to exit and then re-enter the game to fully clear things up.

VERY annoying!!

CoD works fine for me too.

I'm having an issue with keyboard backlog as well, though it doesnt seem to be as pronounced as yours.  When I am playing counter-strike through the steam service, I have a usb mouse plugged in.  Sometimes when I am moving around i will keep moving even after letting up on the key, as if it were clearing out the buffer.  Also, sometimes the mouse will just stop during a flick.  Y movement seems unnaffected, but it wont move on the x axis.  After a breif second, mouse control returns to normal, but let me tell you its nigh impossible to hit people when the mouse randomly stops moving.  Also, sometimes when I am crouching and firing, the keyboard buffer full error sound will play over and over until I stop.  Any ideas?  I just got this laptop 5 days ago and this is a pretty big downer since the only game i play is counterstrike.

Thanks,

 Keith

As was determined in this thread: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=18743 the keyboard issue here on the 8600 and the XPS are an issue of the Apoint driver.  Removing this from my startup has made me keyboard-issue free in every program that it was causing problems in.  Dell, we need a new driver to fix this problem.  It's one thing to have a band-aid solution, but I would like a fully functional keyboard and pointing device.  I don't think that's too much to ask for a $2300 computer.  Any word on an update for this?
