REALLY need help. Inoperable computer, not finding any devices. HELP PLEASE!
Last week I had a really awful virus, that was blocking my antivirus' from running, as the bad ones often do. In attempting to fix it I ran my computer in safe mode, then ran the scans. they got through, and erased much of it, but there was still some left, and still a few problems.
so I went to the command prompt window and entered "msconfig" to get to the system configuration, and disabled all unneccesary devices and programs on next start up, hoping to pacify the virus so that I could clean it up.
Well now the virus is still there, and I cant get my devices to reenable. Attempting to enable them results in messages such as "device not found" no matter how many times I tell it to restart with normal startup, it continues to leave my devices disabled. I am internetless, soundless, and who knows what else. PLEASE, someone help!
system is Dell Xps m140 laptop, running windows xp

First, backup any files you must have. Can you connect to the Internet using a cable (not wireless)? If not, then download these programs to another PC, transfer, install, and run these programs one at a time: Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Spyware Doctor (part of the free Googe Pack).
If this doesn't work, go to this website and follow the instructions exactly: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html
You may want to seriously consider a complete reinstall.
Hope this helps.

well thank you for your reply, but did you forget? That computer is no longer able to recieve internet. and most functions dont work. those programs are exactly the ones I was attempting to run, that the virus wouldnt let me. It would shoot me down with a blue screen of death after about 30 seconds of scanning.

Best advise was already given. Backup any files you really need to save to a thumb-drive, CD, ext. , if you can, then do a complete restore.
If your Dell factory image is still on the unit, you can restore to that.
For Windows XP, on startup hold down the control & F11 keys.
For Windows Vista, on startup hold down the F8 key.
Hope this helps
