Replacing E6430 HD LCD panel with HD+ LCD panel

Hi,

We have a Dell E6430 with the HD LCD panel. The user wanted us to upgrade it to the HD+ LCD panel which is also available on the e6430 model. We bought the HD+ panel and proceeded to install it an found that the screen would not display properly (improper colors, changing colors and very poor resolution). Thinking we got a bad panel we returned it for another, same problem. My question is simple, to do this upgrade from the lower resolution panel to the higher resolution panel, is there anything else that needs changed. This is not a driver issue because the screen problem even exists just booting into thhe BIOS setup screen.  Are both the IBM graphics chp and the nvidia chips on the system board.  HELP!!

First note - if you do this, you lose your system warranty.  if the system is new, send it back and order a new one.

Second note:  you need three things:

A display known to be compatible with your model system,

A new video cable (runs between mainboard and display), and most likely:

A new plastic shell for the screen (the plastics for one screen resolution often don't fit another).

So -- you're basically looking at replacing the entire top half of the notebook plus the display cable.

The cables are not the same - higher resolution screens need a different cable.

Don't dismiss the plastics part  either - in the E-series, the plastic covers ARE often different for screens of different resolution.

If you're Dell-authorized for repairs, just look up the differences in the part numbers and specifications for the cable and back cover assemblies.

OK, first both HD and HD+ LCD are  available on the E6430 from Dell and we are warranty authorized to service Dell computers so the only warranty we lose is the one on the screen itself.

The upgrade screen was purchased from Dell with the assurance that "yea it's compatible with your system" so we've got that covered.

The mention of the video cable is interesting and may be the answer but it would be noce to have someone from Dell confirm it.

Since both screens are the same size and configuration, changing the plastics is unneccesary.

So I'm basically left with the question; Are the video cables for both LCD panels the same or is a different one shipped with the high res screen?

Thanks for the reply!!

I would like to upgrade my laptop the same way as you described above (HD to HD+).

Were you successful with a new cable?
