I honestly know nothing about computers whatsoever.  It's just a card on the bottom of my laptop that they are replacing and on the phone he kept calling it "memory".  I'm just going to assume that my files are safe.

If you mean Dell is replacing some bad sticks of RAM, no, you won't lose any files.

You will be fine. You won't lose any data . It's easy to replace; 2 screws on the cover and the ram just slips right out. Just make sure you are grounded before you open your cover and mess with the new stuff or you could ruin it. RAM is your short-term memory that gets wiped away after a program uses it and is then reused again.
