Screen doesn't resize for lower resolutions

Hi
I have a Dell Inspiron 9100.
Full screen resolution is 1680 x 1050

But when I reduce the resolution, like 1280 x 1024 ... or 640 x 480, the screen just becomes smaller (centered) ... It doesn't occupy the entire screen so I could see bigger...  I doent stretch out to full screen.

How can I fix this problem as I see very tiny fonts in 1680 x 1050 and want to decrease the resolution to see things bigger.

as far as i can remember, there is an option to control this, both in the windows ATI control panel, and in your system bios (press some button, F2 i think it was, during boot). You can tell it whether you want lo-res screens to stretch to fill the viewable area, or to maintain their aspect ratios. I'm not sure what that results in for screens that are not wide-aspect ratio and are still of lower vertical resolution that your native resolution.

I'm using a 1920x1200 Inspiron 9100, and it's default behaviour is to stretch all lo-res screens to completely fill my display. I'd like it if i could tell it to scale non-wide screens so they fit vertically, but maintain the aspect ratio (ie. leave dead areas on the sides of the screen), but I don't think that's a current option.

I know this has been a rather vague post, PM me if you want the exact places i saw these settings (to lazy to reboot to windows to find them now)
