Screen fonts blurry

Greetings! I'm using w2k on an Inspiron 1100. I'm finding the screen fonts to be blurry. My eyes aren't the best, but I do have it set to the highest res, etc. I'm finding I have to increase font sizes to really see them. I also have font smoothing enabled. I had a Thinkpad 600 before this machine and didn't have this problem. How can you tell if your screen is displaying poorly? Or are these screens just not all that great for text? Thanx,

Steven

You say you have it set to to the highest resolution, but are you sure that it is set to 1024x768? if not, and that option isn't avilable you, need to reinstall your video drivers.

Try turning off font smoothing, I noticed on the Inspiron 1100 that font smoothing makes fonts appear more blurry than smooth.

Thanx for the responses. I do have the resolution set to the correct setting, and I downloaded the latest driver from Intel's site. Turning font smoothing off only makes things worse. I'm just wondering if there's something particularly wrong with this screen or if it's just the way it is. I'll have to find someone with one of these machines on campus or whatever and compare. It's not horrible, but I certainly had better screen font res on my old Thinkpad 600.

What was the text like when it was running WinXP? The notebook isn't designed to run under Win2k, so that may be the problem.

Hmmm. Not designed for w2k? I don't think that's quite true. It would be a disaster to design your computer for only xp? However, xp has clear type, which does help screen fonts appear more readable. I don't think it's enabled by default though. You, I think, have to go to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/1.htm to enable it. Obviously this doesn't help me. Cheers,

Steven
