Try connecting it to an external monitor and see if you are getting any display. Reply with your findings.

If it suddenly dimmed, it's likely the inverter -- if the dimming took place over time, perhaps with a reddish tinge to the screen, it's more likely the backlight bulb.

it has dimmed suddenly. what is the remedy?

The first thing to try replacing is the inverter -- the power supply board for the backlight.  It's behind the screen (follow the two wires up from the mainboard and remove it -- use the part number on it to source a replacement).  The part should cost under $30.

If that doesn't fix the problem, it could be a backlight issue - or more likely a mainboard that's faulty;  it may not be worth the cost to replace these on a system this old.
