Screen problems on laptop

when I turn on my laptop the screen is usually white with colored vertical lines through it. I can wiggle the screen in a left and right manner and it will bring the screen up as it should be. But the screen quickly starts to fade out. I can wiggle the screen again and it will come back to normal but then fades out again. I am pretty computer stupid so Im not sure what is going on. Any ideas?
