When you go into the display settings you're going to want to set it to the highest resolution possible ( native resolution ) on LCD's is always the best.
The fonts can also be changed within the Appearance settings.
What kind of laptop is this? maybe you need to change the refresh rate. ( newer model LCD's allow this )
maybe this helps: try to go to display properties by right clicking on the desktop then go to settings then try to change the screen resolution to 1024*768 and try to click on the advanced button try check if it is 96dpi if not try to change it.
