Serial port problem

I am using a new 9 pin to 25 pin adapter to connect an OBD-II automotive diagnostic adapter to the serial port.  I get the message

"Interface Hardware not Detected".  Message "Com3" appears (means com3 available?).  Same result if I try a Palm Pilot docking station...does not recognize hardware.

What am I doing wrong? What do I need to "set" or "enable".  And, most imortant, how do I do whatever needs to be done?

What system are you using? Try to go into the system setup (hit F2 when you see the dell logo) and look for serial port assignements there. If it has the option to enable or disable then enable it. Also if you can reassign the com ports then do so. Also try running diagnostics on your serial port and flashing your system bios to the latest on available on this site. If it fails then you need a motherboard replacement.

Well-------I've discovered my own problem.  My  Inspiron 2650 has ONLY a parallel printer port. NO serial port.  I thought ALL computers had a serial port---like all computers have a power supply.  Being a "computer dummy", how do I hook my serial hardware to my laptop?  Go out and buy a laptop with a serial port?  Be sure I will read ALL the computer specs fine print next time I buy a computer---if specs don't mention a power supply, I will call manufacturer to be sure it does.  Kind of like asking if a car comes with tires.

Got a Serial to USB adapter a few weeks ago.  This was the answer to my problem.  Thanks for your input.

You may wanna check your local computer stores for a USB serial adapter, sorta like a cable that connects serial ported devices via USB.
