Simple Firewire question

I am new to the firewire scene.  I have an Inspiron 5100.  I have a new Digital Video camera(Canon) on the way...  When I get it, and get the proper firewire cable, will i need any sort of software to transfer video from the camera to the laptop?  Can anyone give me a simple respond as to how get the video from camera to laptop.

Thanks!

if you have xp then you can use the inclusive windows movie maker though it's just basic!

Yes, I have XP Home edition.  Im just worried about getting from camera to laptop, not worried about editing it.

Thanks for the reply

I dont think the 5100 has firewire, so you would need a PCMCIA firewire card.

Yes it does.  The 5100 has a firewire port.

I've got a JVC miniDV that I use all the time with my 5150.  Most video editing apps have a capture feature built in.  Also you can download MS Video Encoder 9.  Basically you just run the wire between them and put the Camera in playback mode if you want to transfer video from a tape already recorded.  Windows should autodetect it.  If you want to capture video to the computer in real time, you can hook them up and power up the camera in record mode.  Also, if you're going to use built in Windows Movie Maker, be sure to upgrade to version 2, it gives Apples IMovie  serious competition.  You should also be able to capture still pictures through the camera icon in my computer while its connected.
