Sound problem but also computer slow

Fot the past few weeks I´ve been having a problem mainly while playing music. I use I Tunes alot and the music sounds terrible. The thing is the whole system doesn´t seem to respond too well. I´ve checked viruses, spy ware etc. downloaded Tune up and run all the tests and the problem goes on. It seems to me that the RAM is running low, but I don´t know why. I cleared all un necessary files from the hard disk and its now 75% free space, but still the same. The music fails and also other multi tasking.

My system info

Inspiron 1300 ME051
OS windows XP home v. 2002
Hard disk 60 + 20 GB
1.60 GHz, 504 MB RAM

Would really appreciate some help

If your remaining data is backed up then your situation is ideal for using PC Restore. Dell's PC Restore is an image of your original operating system, drivers, applications and configuration settings in a hidden partition on the hard drive. It's like a normal reformat in that you have to save all of your data to removable media, but it's quicker (supposedly takes about 10 minutes) and simpler because it includes all of the drivers so you won't have to re-install those. Whatever was working when you got the computer will work after PC Restore, except for any hardware problems.

To use PC Restore you restart and press Ctrl + F11 during the restart process and it should take you to the "PC Restore" menu. Anything that doesn't work afterwards either wasn't working when the computer was shipped or is the result of hardware malfunction.

If the computer seems to be back up to normal operating speed, then re-install your other programs one at a time, but always create a System Restore point each time. Then if you run into problems again you can use System Restore to get back out of trouble.

Thanks, however I´m afraid I deleted the information needed to do a PC restore and uninstalled the Norton Ghost thing.
Anyway out of this mess?

There are probably ways to tackle your problems short of an operating system re-installation but you have tried the things I can think of. I suggest you run the full Dell Diagnostics to check for any hardware failure and if the hardware passes then do a conventional format and OS installation.

To run Diagnostics restart the computer and as soon as it starts to boot up hold down f12. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests for 3 or 4 minutes before the Dell Diagnostic starts.

If you have previously reformatted your hard drive then the Diagnostics partition might have been wiped off. If the Dell Diagnostics option is not present, run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD if you have one. if you need Resource and installation disks you can get them from Dell.

What I´d like to do is get these OS and utilities discs, the trouble is your link takes me to Dell USA and I am in Spain, I can´t find the same request form in Dell Spain. Will write to them and see what they say, but if you have an idea would appreciate a reply.
Thanks
