Speedstep and XP problem

CPx 650J, W2K upgraded to XP Pro.. Processor running at 498MHz, will not step up. No options in Control Panel. Will step down to under 400MHz when idle,.supposedly if you

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    The Control Panel window appears.
  2. Click Performance and Maintenance.
  3. Click Power Options.

I only have Power Options in control panel, no Performance and Maintenance. I installed  DELL OS Updates, A17, 5/24/2002,

I installed Intel SpeedStep, v. 2.3, A11 when W2K was on it. Wanted to uninstall SpeedStep but can find a uninstaller and not in Add/Remove.

Any suggestions????

Just downloaded and ran the Intel CPU Speedstep Id program and it shows it is working properly. Read a lot and find that XP has speedstep built in, although it over rides speedstep program installed in W2K. Usining My Computer properties shows 498MHz which supposedly is a false reading.

Hoever, in BIOS it shows as 500MHz as current speed. Really don't understand it. Anyone familiar with speed stepping and XP?

Only thing I know is, I used to have an Inspiron 5000e (nice machine) which came with Win 2k, but when I upgraded it to xp Pro, the speedstep never worked right.

Good luck!

you could always use SpeedswitchXP (google it, german domain) to view and control your speedstep

you will have to check if your laptop is supported; most dell ones are; but some have partial vs full support
