I only use standby if I'm going to walk away from the computer for a short period of time. It holds all of your information in memory and uses some power, so I don't use it when i'm on battery. I also usually don't shut down my computer, ever. I set my computer to go to hibernate by closing the lid. I figure it's easy and fast so I can close up, put it away, and get going. Hibernate does not use power like standby does. It takes all of your memory and saves it to the hard drive and then turns off the computer.

I thought just closing the lid puts it in standby. I have a 600m. Does just closing the lid put it in standby or hibernate on the 600m?

Side question- which is better, standby or hibernate, for the longevity of my 600m? I use my laptop for around an hour every night.

thanks,
David

I'm not familiar with the 600m. However, I believe if you go to the Dell QuickSet app. You can choose to have your rig go on standby mode when you close the display lid.

I personally like standby, but I use my notebooks quite often. At night, my i8600 is usually in standby mode.
