Someone found a solution to this annoying problem?

Hi Cesmarti,

Thank you for your response. Optical drives have moving parts and mechanical devices make a certain amount of noise while operating. BIOS update might not be released for this issue. However, you may update the BIOS, once it is available.

Hope this helps.

The noise is intermittent, i hear it only when the laptop startup, (just before the logo dell appears), when i connect a usb drive and when i start windows media player, (it doesnt make the noise with another audio player, for exemple vlc), there is no cd inside the cd reader.

Thanks

Hi Cesmarti,

Thank you for your response. At what point do you hear the noise. Is it intermittent or constant? Do you hear the noise with or without a disk in the drive? Please share the results of the diagnostics.

Please reply if you have any questions.

The laptop is making the same noise when a cd is ejected, the noise comes from inside the cd reader

All peripherals are disconnected, i will run the diagnostics.

Thanks

Hi Cesmarti,

Could you elaborate more on the issue. Please determine the type of noise(grinding noise, clicking noise, beeping) and check which side the noise is emitted. Please disconnect any external peripherals connected to the computer and check (flash drives, printers, external hard drives).

I would recommend you to run the diagnostics on the computer to check the hardware functionality of the computer.

To run the ‘Dell Diagnostics’

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, press F12 on the Dell logo
  • Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu
  • Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Cesmarti / Pilsner73,

This appears to be normal. The optical drive looks for a bootable disk at start up and moves the laser assembly. This is normal behavior and working as designed.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cesmarti,

Thank you for your response. The optical drive (even if there is no disc inserted) and hard drive first receive power and make themselves ready for use, a whirring or buzzing sound or noise may be present for a few seconds. This is normal and is working as per design. You may try to update the BIOS and see if it makes any difference.

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*Battery is 10%> or >10% charged
*Battery charger should be connected
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

  • Click on the link http://dell.to/X6nHm4
  • Click on ‘Download File’
  • Check on the radio box ‘Single-file download’
  • Click ‘Continue’
  • Click ‘Save’
  • Choose the location as desktop, save the file on the desktop
  • Right click and choose ‘Run as Administrator’
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program
  • Restart the computer

Hope this helps.

You may want to do a Google search on windows auto checking/accessing cd-rom/floppy drives and see what you find.
