Stolen?

My ?? is this. If I purchased a stolen Laptop, but didn't know it at the time, would Dell replace it? Could I report the person that sold it? Or would I be out my money and Laptop? Any advice would be nice. Thanks

You can be jailed by purchasing a stolen laptop whether you know it or not becuase ignorance of the law is not an excuse. I'm sure Dell will not take any actions to this concern since it's out of their jurisdiction. Better find the person who sell it to you and contact the police. Tell them that you knew that the laptop is stolen and you just find a way to apprehend the person who sell it then you contact them immediately.. I saw it from a movie. :smileyvery-happy:

Honestly, there's nothing you can do about it but to find the person who sold it.:smileywink:

1) why do you think the computer was stolen?

2) did you use a credit card to by it?   many will probably offer you a degree of protection if you contact them about it within a reasonable time.

Eclipsetzzz,

"Would Dell replace it?"  I don't think so.  The Service Tag uniquely identifies the unit.  If stolen, Dell has probably been notified and the Service Tag is on a watch list.

"Could I report the person that sold it?"  Yes.  Some police departments have cybercrime units.

"Would I be out my money and Laptop?"  Most likely, yes.  However, the amount you would be out would probably be much less than fines (or worse) imposed by a judge if you are found guilty of possessing stolen property."

"Any advice...?"  Yes.  If the laptop has Lojack installed, the authorities are already aware that you are in possession of stolen property.  http://www.lojackforlaptops.com/
If it has Zapeze, then the hard drive will soon be made useless.  http://www.zapeze.com/

In short, contact your local authorities.  They can advise you on how best to get the laptop back into the hands of the original thief so that the culprit can be arrested with the unit in his/her possession.  They prefer to arrest the one who committed the original crime.  Sometimes, bigger issues are at stake; i.e., hi-tech thieves who specialize in fencing  stolen HDTVs, XBoxes, Computers, etc.

My daughter was the victim of such a hi-tech theft gang.  They cleaned out her brand new home before the security firm could schedule installation of anti-theft devices.

Hope this info helps.
