The tab that protrudes from the laptop above the Ethernet plug must be pressed down to release the latch that retains the plug. If the tab has been broken it will be necessary to completely turn off the laptop and then disconnect the AC adapter cable and all other cables from the laptop. Then use a strong thin blade (such as the tip of a jewellers' screwdriver) to press down the latch while withdrawing the plug.

we tried that but i dont think the latch is broken.  somethings got a hold of it and wont let go. i'm scared i'm going to break something on this one week old machine.  i think we are going to have to take it to a shop.

thanks!

Very important to mention removing the battery when working on a laptop.
