Studio - Jammed Touch Sensitive Eject Button
Evening all,
The touch sensitive eject button on my new Studio 15 laptop appears to be stuck on. When I reboot the laptop, the media control lights flash back and forth as normal. However, the CD drive immediately ejects and the eject button light stays permanently on. This all happens the second the laptop comes on - long before it boots into Vista. This makes me suspect a hardware rather than software issue.
None of the other touch sensitive media controls work.
I've tried cleaning the button, checking for dirt under and on the button and rebooting the laptop. I also rested it overnight.
I only got the laptop on Friday.
Any ideas?

In my case I have the same problem in both windows and linux. It's also an issue before Windows or Ubuntu begins loading. As soon as all the buttons do their cascading light thingy the eject comes back on immediately.
Let me know if/when the problem reoccurs.

Nicholas..
Thank you for your suggestions, it DOES NOT work and could not have worked for two reasons:
1- MediaDirect comes full install, unless there is something extraordinary that you did, please share with us specifically, as how to install it completely.
2- If you uninstall the driver and restart the computer the WINDOWS will automatically reinstall the drivers from the cache. So it would be the same driver all over again.
I was skeptical but gave it a try and guess what. I got BOD (blue screen of death)….

my studio 15 has the same problem. i made a similar post here regarding the issue and there are no replies either. its NOT a software issue. so installing media direct or any other dell bloatware software will not cure the issue. i formatted the hard drive with no operating system on the drive. installed a fresh copy of windows vista and the problem is still there. there is no way the issue has anything to do with software.
the problem is defiantly hardware related. something with the touch panel. tried all the suggestions that everyone has mentioned here and on other forums and nothing works.
my own little experiment was to remove the touch panel. bend and flex the touch panel around the eject button in hopes to relive some pressure around the eject button and the volume control button. then re-install the panel but take note of the brass threaded insert on the panel that the screw threads into from the bottom side. its right between the eject and volume control buttons. i installed that screw very very loose. hardly applying any pressure to the panel.
my theory is that when you tighten that screw down snug it applies pressure to the front side of the touch panel and can cause the eject or volume up button to remain stuck on for a short period of time. the system automatically times it out or the warmth/temp of the laptop increases and then the buttons work normally.
its been 2 days so far and all is well.........i will post an update if it still acts up.
anyone have any input on this?

So, got myself another post deleted, whatever...
short but sweet: my dell support contact told me thad they were working on a new bios (because they believe the problem is bios related)
this on the other hand could be working as well. Anyone else tried this? I'll wait for results before I try it :)

Worth a try I guess... plus it's the weekend and I'm bored.
Can you please post a link to A08? I just tried to find it but I'm only seeing A06.

Sorry I didnt specify, yes I have the 1537.
If you have time, take yours apart it is easy. Just make sure you dont scratch the top cover, lay the laptop down on something soft when you are working.

Yes the deleting of posts is ridiculous. Apparently you can't speak of seeking any public action against this issue. Anyway...
BIOS A08 is up on dell's site, I upgraded my bios and it still works so you could at least try it out.
I've still been lucky since my hardware was replaced (it was probably the act of rewiring the cables that really fixed it).
You can easily remove your 'center control cover' and attempt to fix it that way as another poster mentioned, here is dell's server manual:

good luck

Do you have a 1535 or 1537? I think A08 is for 1537

New Update:
Well guys, I just want to fill you in on my situation so far. I have done all updates on sofware and bios and all that has been asked by dell. then they replaced the hinge cover 4 times, then they replaced the motherboard, then the replaced my HD with a completely new OS on it. After all of this nothing as worked. They are supposed to call me back and I will be most likely be getting an entirely New Computer from Dell. So for anyone going through problems I have done all of these with no success. If anyone knows the real fix please post it. Also a question do you think this is a good ending with recieving a brand new computer from dell or not?

Do you mean that they are sending you a completely new Studio or that it's a different model?
It's taken me months to get them to send me a refurbished unit and I'm skeptical, but hopeful.
Anyway, if you are getting a new one, please tell me how you accomplished this; all of the people I've spoken with say, "I assure you sir, it is impossible to get a new model." What are the magical words to make Dell treat you nicely?

I may have just figured out why my laptop came back in worse condition than it was in before. The system properties are not even identifying this as the same computer anymore. The installed the MoBo from a different model.
The problem is if I do the right thing and report this to Dell, in order to help them, it will cause further delay in my replacement and probably make them accuse me of damaging the laptop yet again. Truly disappointing and horribly angering.

Sooo. My girlfriend pointed something out to me and that would be the reason why my posts got deleted. I'll just repost them without any kind of swear words and we'll see if this post remains:
No. 1:
So basically the problem is the cable of the touch panel? If I interpret your post correctly (I sure hope so) then the only apparent problem is that the touch panel cable is lacking a proper electric insulation? Wouldn't it then be better to put the tape around the cable? And to get this clear you did this and it worked for you? Anybody else tried this? Because if it's working we could write the Dell technical support and tell them that the cable isn't insulated properly - that sounds like it could fix the problem, right?
btw. does anybody know why I can't reach this site with firefox anymore? Started somewhere around last week - if it's only my problem I'll look into my firefox settings :) thanks in advance
No. 2:
Well, spamming this thread won't get you nowhere anyway. It's not like Dell is trying to cover up that there's a problem for some users of the Studio 15
And to be honest the support guy I'm corresponding to is really nice and he's really really trying to help me fix my problem.
Problem is, most likely, this thread is going in a direction Dell doesn't like, I don't see exactly why because (at least I) haven't openly, or un-openly accused them of anything. I mean it's not like I wanna sue them or anything, I just want to have a notebook that runs without problems and if I can help Dell figure out what that problem is so it might be fixed for future customers, that'd be great! But yeah, the tip with unplugging your battery is... well... useless? I can't imagine that it worked for anybody. It didn't work for me - with none of the 2 notebooks I have/had. So, yes, some tips in here that were "verified" are questionable to say the least. I'm not trying to offend anybody, just want to fix my problem :)
No. 3:
At first I was like "hey that could work" but then I figured the same out as you, that it even happens before the OS loads so it couldn't be a driver issue :/
Sorry to hear what kinda move the support pulled on you krype but my support (I just figured you live in the US? Since I'm from Germany I get "other" support than you) is really nice and he told me that they suspect I could be a BIOS issue and that their guys are working on a new BIOS version but he couldn't say when it gets released. That's the first time I heard something from them that really sounded like they knew what was going on. So I'll wait and see if that fixes the problem. When I get a new BIOS you should too, I guess. Hope that eases the tensions a bit ;)
Basically I just deleted one word out of each post that could be considered offensive in a very very strange way.
Now I wait and see...
