In the past few days, I tried to install several versions of the Alps driver on my Latitude C640 with the Synaptics touch pad. Unfortunately, the extended touch pad capabilities of that driver are disabled when used with the Synaptics touch pad. So, I couldn't see the option to enable the Tap Off feature. I also dislike the way that virtual  scrolling is implemented in this touch pad. It is impossible to stop the scrolling at the exact position of one's choice. It usually goes over it and continues scrolling for a few more paragraphs. I'm really disappointed in this touch pad!

I had the same problem with the Latitude C610. I replaced the top plate that also included the touchpad and it sorta resolved my problem temporarily. I'm saying this cuz bought the replacement top bezel from Ebay and was not sure if the part was 100 % working or not. I still get the jumping or moving cursor when I move the laptop from a stationary position but not as bad as before. Lemme know if you come across any other fixes as well.

My sympathies. I can't help you out (yet), but, let me say, I am sometimes driven mad by the same problem. Please let me know (and I'll dothe same) if you discover any method of coping or means or fixing it.

(As yet, in fact, I may be a step worse offf than you: in steps, anyway. I can't even access the relevant (sensitivity) properties on the Touchpad. I did try to reinstall the driver, for all that that did (some, but not much).)

Best....

I had the same problem with an "Alien" mouse - I fixed it by pressing F2 at boot up, and choosing the option to disable the touchpad and only use a PS/2 mouse, which I have connected. I have given up with the touchpad, but at least I have full control of the mouse now.

Hi!

I couldn't use my touchpad until I managed to fix it. I just got so mad using it with this kind of problem.

I tried (I've Latitude C600) some newer drivers and also some other ones as well, but after while the problem came back as usually.

Now I managed to fix the problem by literally blocking connection from a pointing stick to main board and it works from since on.

Here is how I did it: http://nativeland.kolhoos.ee/stories/storyReader$497

Don't know if it is helpful for you but at least I share some of my success of resovling my mouse problem.

Take care,
Priit

I think I might have found the solution. Download the new driver from the Synaptics web site: www.synaptics.com

The new driver version is 7.12.7 for Windows 2000/XP. When I installed the driver and rebooted the computer, it kept the settings from the previous version. The Palm Check slider is at the most right position (maximum). I also disabled the Wheel Detection in the Device Manager -> Pointing Devices ->Synaptics pointing device -> Advanced Settings. Also,  don't forget to check Hide Pointer While Typing in Control Panel -> Mouse -> Pointer Options. This only works in certain applications like Microsoft Office. Unfortunately this setting doesn't affect the mouse pointer when you are typing in the text box in Internet Explorer like what I'm doing now. However, my mouse pointer is not jumping anymore.

This new driver adds a sliding bar to the tip of the mouse pointer when you use the vertical or horizontal scroll function on the touchpad. The cool thing is that when I try to intentially move the mouse pointer with the palm of my hand, it stays put. I can only move it with my finger now.

The problem may have been solved.
