A 1.6 Pentium-M is the rough equivalent of a 2.6 GHz P4. Assuming you got the 7200 rpm notebook drive, the drive throughput should be similar.

Relatively cheap desktops? While they may be cheap, that does not mean they are not good, which is what you implied. I have yet to find a desktop aside from gaming systems (Alienware, Voodoo, etc.) that surpass the Dell specs AND the price.

If you build them yourself, it is alot cheaper.  I can build a top of the line computer for about half, with better parts.

Yes, that's true, but I was referring to manufactured computers. Sorry if I didn't make that clear earlier.

just another question,,,but if your that computer savvy,,,why did you use HT (hyper threading)  that tech is been dropped from intel, and is no longer being used in new systems and the performance is not what it seems to be,,,also what most people do not realize is that software manufactures do not support it either>

I never said I was that computer savvy...One of the reasons that Intel is dropping HT is that to truly optimize it you must run a dual setup, which most people don't.  The processor is still one of the top 2 on the market.  I bought mine b/c it is very stable when oc'ed.  Anyways, why does it matter?  I understand that you like Dell.  Its not a big deal to me.  I didn't try and rip on you for it and test your devotion.  I build my own computers because its cheaper (not that hard) and I know the exact parts going in it.  Thats all I was saying.  Hopefully everyone else who reads this will understand that.  I was just posting my specs to see how they compared.  I didnt know alot obout Pentium M.  Thats why I posted.

And to repond to another part of the question. I have built a laptop before.  Not as hard as you would think, but it takes a bit longer.  I wasnt paying for the laptop (college grad present) so I didnt worry about it.

Thanks to everyone else that has been helpful though.

Actually, I would like to build my own laptop. Then I could actually get a small system with a good video card. However, I don't think you can just buy the cases for the laptops. If I'm wrong, somebody please give me a link to where I can get these.

the problem with trying to build your own laptop is that unilke desktop building and modding, its not very const beneficial, hence why I am paying Dell for my 9300 that will be here in 3 weeks lol.

You have two options really.  You can buy a barebones laptop kit for a relatively cheap price and then strip it and buy replacement parts that fit your needs or you can try and find an old broken laptop off Ebay or something and mod it.  Honestly thats the one thing that bites about laptops is that they are pretty manufacturer specific.  When I did one it took me a  month to finally find the CPU that fit the board I got.  Its alot more broad than just two types of P4 sockets and a couple AMD socket types.

If you are still interested, http://www.coboc.com/diy/Config.asp?Section=10001&?CMP=knc-adw0rds is a good parts site that I used.  It wasnt worth the headache though.  It sounded cool and I did it, but I probably won't again.

My 10 cents...hope it helps.

"isn't worth the headache"

Ya, that's what I was thinking. I was pretty set on a Dell laptop anyway. Building one or even modding one seems like too much work, since I would have to pay for useless parts and then pay some more for the ones I want. When it becomes as easy as building a desktop, then maybe I'll do it.
