"System memory failure" errors when running hardware diagnostics
Hi
My Inspiron 6000 was crashing after booting to Windows, and eventually I decided the best course of action would be to reformat and reinstall Windows from the recovery CD (I tried doing the "repair" option, and the system restore stuff in XP, but nothing stopped the crashing).
I cleared the disk using KillDisk, and then tried to reinstall using the recovery CD that came with the machine. However, it kept getting about halfway through the "setup is copying files" section, and complains that it can't copy something - that the version copied to the disk isn't a recognised XP file. I then ran the hardware diagnostics (pressing F12 on startup), and it first generated a memory bus stress test failure, followed by multiple "System memory failure. Suspected memory component located on system board at label DIMM_B" messages.
Does anyone know if this is a problem with the motherboard, or the RAM chips or what? Is this something that is relatively easily fixable by me?
Any help gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

to confirm this is the problem, remove that ram module and see if the system works ok.
(usually dell supplies 2 sticks of ram with their system).
if you are still under warranty just call dell and they should replace the bad stick of ram for you.
