The difference between Longevity mode and desktop mode charging..

I have inspiron 5520. I find the two options longevity and desktop mode charging confusing.
The little did i know about is that it doesnt let ur battery to charge upto 100% to reduce the charging cycles, i have enabled them both, but the battery still charges upto 100% all the time.

So what good is it?

and is it alright to enable them both?

Hi atifgohar,

Welcome to the Community.

Desktop Mode

When a system is plugged in continuously, it may reduce the battery health. When the desktop mode setting is enabled, it protects the battery by moderating the extent to which the battery is charged, thereby maximizing battery health. The display brightness remains the same as in plug-in mode. The battery only charges between 50-100% when desktop mode is enabled.

Longevity Mode

When a system is plugged in and unplugged several times a day, it may reduce the life of the battery. When the longevity mode setting is enabled, it protects the battery from frequent charge and discharge cycles. The battery only charges between 88%-100% when longevity mode is enabled.

You can enable both of them.

Hope it helps.

Thanks & Regards

I think it might be handling all the discharging/charging stuff without actually displaying it. I have these options enabled, and when plugged in the battery meter will always display 100%. However, sometimes when I unplug the laptop, it'll instantly drop to a lower charge percentage.

You can check your battery's wear level with a program like HWMonitor.

Thanks,

Still I want to ask. When I have Desktop or Longevity mode (or maybe both) able,  will the battery continue to be charged after it reaches 100%.

I still see the notification "plugged", "charging" when my battery got 100% charged.

Like the OP, I would like a clear and concise explanation about these features. Your answer seems to be have just been copied from the vague and confusing explanation I already have in my Dell XPS 15.

PS Why cant you quote specific posts here?

Desktop mode will only be enabled after 2 weeks of being continuously plugged in to the mains.
