This question is asked every day - you might search a bit to find some of your answers, as well as look at the link above.

Basically, the P-M is a better processor for mobile applications, so if you use your laptop at the desk, plugged in > 95% of the time, or unless you have a need for hideous amounts of speeds, the Pentium-M is abtter choice.

Quite a bit is dfferent between those two processors.  The one that is recommended would be determined by what notebook you have.

EDIT:  I forgot to put the link in.  HERE is the link to Intel's site that describes the differences.

I am currently using a Dell Inspiron 8100, I am thinking of getting a new laptop, but right now I am still not sure yet which laptop should I get, because I don't know much about the differences between Pentium 4 and Pentium M.

My work laptop is a P-M and it is very fast, though I've never owned a P4 so I don't have anything but my 1 GHz i4100 to compare it to HOWEVER, there are benchmarks that show that the fastest P-M is a whole lot faster than the same speed P4.

MHz per MHz, the Pentium 3 was a better processor however there was some benefit from the SSE2 instruction set. So Intel's Israeli research group combined the best features of the Pentium 3 with SSE2 and a bus similar to the Pentium 4 and much improved power management.

Pentium M is a much better proc. in my opinion.  Better battery life and performance while on battery.  I wish more than ever that I'd of gotten the 600m instead of my 5150 when I bought it (8600 wasn't out yet or I'd of bought that).

I'd def. go with the Pentium M

Thanks guys.

I also read about the 64 bit AMD Athlon Mobile Processor, if you compare this AMD 64 bit processor to Pentium M processors, which one is better for laptop? If I am not mistaken, I believe that most software programs are currently still not designed for the 64 bit.

I reckon that the the AMD 64 will not last as long in terms of battery life. The Centrino has been designed specifically for laptops therefore will have a better battery life. Depending on what you need your laptop for will determine which processor would be better. For general use you are unlikely to benefit from the AMD 64.

What is " L2 cache"? What is it used for?

Why is the Pentium M processor more expensive than the Pentium 4 processor?

Think of L1 cache as your top pocket. L2 cache is a sack on your shoulder, and RAM is a warehouse at the end of your street. Swap on your hard drive is the slowest of all.

L1 cache is very expensive, so therefore small. L2 cache is slower so slightly less expensive so you get quite a bit more. RAM is cheap so you get hundreds of times more but probably hundreds of times slower.

You can easily get your cellphone or pen from your top pocket. It takes a bit longer to dig around for them in your sack. If you leave them in the warehouse, you really have to search for them.
