Thermal paste contributes to a better heat flow from one CPU surface to the heatsink.Especially in laptops where much heat is generated by the CPU in a confined place it is necessary to keep the temperature as low as possible and thermal paste is just one part of the whole cooling system to achieve this.The "heat resistance"  can be calculated/tested and depending on the result engineers decide whether to use thermal paste or not,but most laptops will require paste.If you have to replace parts that are in direct contact with thermal paste I do consider it mandatory to renew the it.

Thanks for your reply, So what you are saying is there can be laptops without thermal paste. I am asking this question because I had a Inspiron 1545

which was bought 2 years ago. Currently the laptop is not switching on, Checking with the dell service center, they said the motherboard was gone.

When I enquired the reason for the motherboard breakout, they said there was no thermal paste on the laptop. So how can this happen is it possible mistake by DELL which forgot to apply thermla paste on my laptop. Moreover its not in warranty perios How can such a mistake happen. The laptop was taken maximum care But still a motherboard break up at the end of just 2 years is not explainable. How could you validate this situation. Kindly let me your answers.

I have an Inspiron 1545 myself and especially for this model the cooling system seems to be pretty good = just by looking at it.Missing thermal paste would increase the running time of the fan and I have no doubt that the 1545 could handle it.If your system had had a serious heating problem it would have failed far earlier - but I am just guessing and not a Dell expert,

Electronical devices can fail at any time for whatever reasons.I think you were just unlucky.However since Dell admits a production error you might be entitled for a new mainboard but again: I am not a Dell expert and know nothing about warranty issues.
