Touchpad freezing

The mouse pointer sometimes freezes on my laptop if I touch the scroll zone. Sometimes it will revert to normal after several mimnutes other times I have to reboot to get it to return to normal operation. I have tried reinstalling the driver but this has not resolved the problem.

I had the scroll zones set to narrow but this does not seem to make any difference. I have now disabled scoll zones and this seems to have stopped the problem but makes scrolling in some applications more difficult.
