Touchpad not able to select

The touchpad on my my Inspiron 4150 is unable to click on menus etc when I tap it. Also the left touchpad button does not work. However the right button works OK.

I have tried reuninstalling the touchpad driver using the latest version from the Dell site but this does not help.

I have recently installed MS Service Pack 2 and a Siemens ID mouse, so was wondering whether any of these were causing conflict problems.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks.

simoncjones,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Please run the mouse test from the Dell Diagnostics.  This test should show if you have a hardware problem.  If there is a hardware problem, the palmrest needs to be replaced.

Thanks for your reply, Rollie.

I have run the mouse test and the following result message appeared:

Mouse Test Result Code: 3500-0122: Fail
Msg: Both buttons were detected as pressed

Can you please tell me what I can do next.

Thanks

simoncjones,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The touchpad has failed, and the palmrest needs to be replaced.  If your system is still under warranty, then contact Technical Support to have a warranty service arranged.

Thanks for your reply.

I am concerned that my palmrest has to be replaced yet again. It was only about a year ago when it was last replaced. Six months after I had bought it.

Is this a recurring problem with Inspiron laptops?
