Touchpad not responding

My laptop's touchpad works immediately after booting, but once I login, it stops responding. I checked the driver, it says working fine, though I ain't sure if it is. Can it be a hardware problem? If not, plz provide the link from where I can download the appropriate hardware. I have an inspiron n5010.

Hi ag.portia,

Welcome to the Community.

If the touch pad stops working after logging in to windows that means it is an OS issue. To isolate the issue you can try couple of steps.

1) Please try to log in to an alternate user account and check if it works there.

2) Try to boot the system in to safe mode and check if it works there or not.

To boot in to safe mode please restart the system and as soon as you see Dell logo please press F8 key.

3) Reinstall the touch pad drivers using the below web link:

Please revert with the outcome.

Thank you

Hi ag.portia

Welcome to the community.

This seems to be a touch pad driver issue. Please refer to the below mentioned link to install the touch pad driver:-

http://tinyurl.com/7ychesh

Once you open this link, select your system model and the operating system and select  " All files for Inspiron 15R " and go to "Input" and you will find the touch pad driver. Save it first on your desktop. Once that is done, please uninstall the currently installed driver. To do that, click on "Start" and type in the search box " device manager " and press enter. Go to " Mice and other pointing devices" and right click on touch pad driver and click on Uninstall. You will get a box to delete the software supporting the driver. Check that box and proceed with un- installation. Restart your system and once the system is back into windows, please run the touch pad driver saved on your desktop. Once the installation completes, it should ask to to restart your system. Restart your system and touch pad should work now.

Hope this helps.

Glad to assist you!

The scroll pad on my Dell XPSl502x stops working properly after a minute or so after logging in from cold. Scrolling becomes  very sticky and erratic. The buttons still work. I close the lid for 5 seconds, re-open, log in again, and it works well from then on until the next time I start the computer up from sleeping. I am using Windows 7.  I had similar problems with my Vostro 1500 under Windows XP but never found the consistent work-around that I use now.

Comments please.
