Touchpad on Dell E6500 with Windows 7 cannot be turned off

Actually there is no visible touchpad application in device manager. No tab on HID-compliant or PS/2 Compatable mouse to change it. The F5/Fn function was tried. I have downloaded and used the following drivers and suggested fixes from various sites:

  • DELL_MULTI-DEVICE_A07_R262123,
  • DELL_TOUCHPAD----POINTING-ST_A11_R231736,
  • E6500-win7-A02-R296904,
  •  IPx86_1033_8.20.468.0,
  • R203578, R300780,
  • HP sp40715

Just naming the ones in my download file. This was not a problem until I had to get my computer reloaded due to some missing files after chopping out too many when removing some malware. (yes, the malware is gone) The only thing that changed was it went from 32-bit to 64-bit. It used to have a function that disabled the touchpad when a USB mouse was plugged in and it told me when it was in effect. This is also a problem with my boss' Dell Vostro using an Alps Touchpad. The IT depatrment has fixed the problem with his, but that didn't work with  mine.

And Dell states they do not have a solution to the problem as per this site.

Go figure.....finally found something that partially works right after posting the above. I searched for an Synaptics Touchpad download for Dell E6500 Window 7 and found: The driver folder was named R165804 and was found at

It is not for Windows 7 and stated it was an older driver than what I had, but once I restarted the laptop a Dell Touchpad was displayed in the Device Manager under "Mouse" device. I then updated the driver from "mouse" "properties" "update driver" and it loaded  driver folder "TCPAD". So now I have a Touchpad Icon in the Taskbar. So I'm much further than I was, but still can't turn off touchpad with or without the USB mouse plugged in. Will look for driver that will load the additional functions tab to the "Mouse Properties" display and Tabs.

Additional drivers that didn't previously work: R113813, R231736, R262123

That link is disabled.

The Dell Keypad needs a sledge hammer surgically applied to it. So does the engineer who designed that and the page up down and sideways buttons that sit right where the heel of your hand is supposed to be. What a nitwit. Never had a lap top before and no doubt this will be my last.

Although the link is disabled, I was able to google

touchpad driver Version  7.102.101.223

and found this site with drivers (R235093)

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=GJ21Y

I was able to download and install it and after a restart, I was able to see the Dell Touchpad Icon and disable the Touchpad when an external USB mouse is attached.

Hopefully it works for you as well.
