Unexpected Shutdown Please Help.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, that I got about a year and a half ago. Up until recently the laptop has worked fine, Thursday out of the blue it started shutting down unexpectedly. I would restart the laptop and it would come right back on, I even checked the battery and it was fully charged. I thought it may be a virus, so I downloaded a virus protection and had it checked out the computer, but everything came back fine. I don't know what could possibly be wrong, please help.

Hi,

Welcome to the Community. I recommend you first start by running a diagnostics on your hard drive. Press the F12 key at the Dell Logo, select Diagnostics and run an extended diagnostics on your hard drive. Post back with any error codes.

Thank you.

After the diagnostic hard drive test, it says that my computer/system failed the Targeted Read Test, and the SMART Short Self Test, it also says device type video card, device name mobile intel (r) 4 series express chipset family, test name shader rendering DX10 Test, test result cannot run. It also states that the computer passed on everything else. When the system shuts down it doesn't show an error message it just shuts down, and I turn the power back on, and it doesn't shut back off again sometimes for hour increments .

I ran the diagnostics on my hard drive, and it passed all of the tests except for two. I don't understand if that means that I need to purchase a new hard drive or not, I'm confused.

Your hard drive is definitely faulty and will need to be replaced.  That's one issue.

The shutdowns could be heat-related.  Is the system running abnormally warm?  Is the fan working properly?  If the system is running overly warm, clear any dust accumulation from the heatsink assembly and that should solve the problem.

It would help if you posted the exact error messages you saw.  In general, a hard drive that's failing won't cause spontaneous shutdowns - reboots, yes.  Shutdowns, no.

Would I just need to buy a hard drive from on here, and take it to a computer solutions play, so that they can put it in. I use the computer frequently for long periods because I'm usually doing homework, but mostly I use that laptop to watch movies. I'm trying to figure out if the problem will be solved from just getting a new hard drive or if it will be best to just get another one. I recently bought a HP, and I have been using it for homework, but I was thinking about getting a new Dell.

Hi,

I recommend you replace the hard drive first, as that would be the cheaper option. The hard drive can be replaced by you. Use the below link for help to replace it.
