Upgrading Studio 1747 to Multi-touch Screen?
I have had my Studio 1747 for three years and I am still loving this laptop. The only problem I have had was the optical drive jammed, but Dell sent a repair specialist out and replaced the drive right away. I have upgraded to Windows 8, found a working driver for the Wireless 365 Bluetooth, and am awaiting a fix for the ST MicroElectronics free-fall sensor (but am in no rush for that). My question today is, can I upgrade my display to the multi-touch display initially offered as a customization at the time I purchased this machine? I was thinking about refreshing the body by replacing the scuffed outer shell (I will never choose a colored exterior again, the material Dell uses is impossible to clean and develops permanent scuff marks way too easily) and the wrist pad (which has some minor scratches from a bracelet I once wore). I thought, since I am thinking about replacing the outer bezel, why not look into putting in a touch display? I would like to know if the optional display required a different system board to interface with, or if both versions of this laptop use the same system board. Also, I would really like to know the part number, or perhaps a link to a part break-down for this machine that includes part numbers. I have been all over the website and cannot find any detailed information about parts, except for the lame listing of refurbished standard displays, batteries, hard disk drives, chargers, and docking station. I appreciate any information available on upgrading my current display to touch. :-)

If you look at the screen description, it sounds like you'll need the entire top half of the system, plus the cable.

Given the cost of just the screen, you're likely better off buying a new system - you could easily spend $300 or more on parts alone and not have a warranty to show for it.
