USB Burned?

Hi,

This morning when I tried to start my Dell Inspiron 9200 it just clicked....
The on/off cymbol blinked along with a clipping sound. After some sweating minutes of pushing the on/off button it started but also there was a smell of burning!!!
Now my usb connectors does'nt work?
When I connect my usb m-audio keyboard to one of the usb ports the keyboard gets power but doesnt seem to connect?

What has happened? What can I do?

I have 4 usb ports on my Dell and none of them are working now...

Thankful for all help.

Daniel.

sounds like a m/board issue to me.

if everything else works then you could try an usb pcmcia card to give your usb ports but there's no guarantee it'll work.

M/board issue?

Shall I get a new M/board then or can I just buy new usb ports???

I'm no pro at this....

Or do you mean that pcmcia is an alternative to my damaged usb ports?

Thanks for your quick respond. :)

the usb card may be an alternative workaround for getting working usb ports if the problem is your m/board.

Ok.. I see.

They're not too expensive so I'll check it out.
Can I buy new usb ports for my m/board or is the m/board roasted?
Thanx.

:)

If the USB ports on the mainboard are non-functional, the board must be replaced.

Oh my g....

They are not functional!!!

I bought a pcmcia card and now I have 2 usb ports instead of 4... Misery!

Is it expensive and difficult to change the M/board. Above all, is it necessary?

Before you decide to replace the mainboard - which will be expensive ($500-700 depending on whether you do it yourself) - do a complete format/install of the OS. Install XP, patch to SP2, install chipset, notebook system software, video, audio, network, modem, touchpad, etc. software. Then have Windows redetect the USB hardware. If the USB still doesn't work, you'll know for sure.

If the PCMCIA card works and you need more ports, consider a powered hub - it's a lot cheaper than a replacement system board.

I agree... :)

same thing, I guess the motherboar's toast. Looks like the 9200 really has an issue there...
