USB Controller missing.

Just did a fresh install of Windows XP home on an Inspiron 1100. Applied service packs 1 and 2. Used the most recent chipset drivers. Problem is that the USB ports are inop and when I check the device manager there is no USB controller. Gone through the process of reinstalling everything twice and both time the USB is the only thing not working. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Once you have SP2 and the chipset driver in place, go into the device manager and have WIndows redetect the USB hardware and install the driver.

in device manager delete everything under usb then reboot your laptop.

At restart, windows will redetect everything hopefully curing your usb problem.

Thanks for the attempt, installed the notebook software and rebooted as the software instructed. After reboot usb devices still do not work
and the device manager still has no usb controller.

Okay, the only other thing that I can suggest is that your install the specific Intel chipset driver for your model as a later version may actually target a different range of chipsets to the one the 1100 uses. Newer isn't always better.

Thanks for trying to help. Installed the drivers from your link and still no usb. Starting to think it is a hardware problem though the ports did work

prior to the fresh installation of xp home.

Thanks for trying to help bacillus, turns out it was a faulty mainboard. Dell replaced it and now it works normally.
