USB device error code 10

Hello,

I am trying to read data off some old SCSI hard drives before disposing of them using an Adaptec USB to SCSI adapter attached to equally old Dell XPS 1730 laptop running Windows XP SP3.  This is the last version of Windows the adspter would support.  While attempting to install the adapter, I get an error code 10, this device cannot start.

I checked with Adaptec and tried their solution of shutting down unneeded devices to no avail.  I then uninstalled all USB devices, rebooted and let Windows install the drivers again.  When I installed the Adaptec device, I was able to get the SCSI interface to work for several minutes before I lose the connection due to the same error.

I have switched USB connections and get the same error.

I am considering reflashing the bios and reinstalling the OS.

Does anyone have an idea how to diagnose or fix the problem?

I will about getting another computer to test this device on.
